Canoeing

Depending on weather conditions and the ability of the participants, there are three great locations for canoeing around Brora (photos show members of the East Sutherland Canoe Club whose web site can be seen here). Please be responsible when accessing these locations - read about this here.

1. The sea - these three photo shows in the sea on New Year's Eve 2015! 

a. Photo taken near Golspie.

 

 

 

 

 

b. Photo taken near two miles north near the magnificant Dunrobin Castle.

 

 

 

 

 

c. Photo taken two miles further north near the Sputie Burn - a favourite haul out are for numerous seals (see photos on our beaches page here).

 

 

 

 

 

2. Loch Brora - a four mile long loch in the heart of the attractive rural scenery of Strath Brora.

a. Paddling away from Carrol Rock.

 

 

 

 

 

b. Paddling in front of Eilean nam Faoileag (a cranog built c. 2,000 years ago) on Loch Brora.

 

 

 

 

 

c. Sailing towards the shore.

 

 

 

 

 

3. The River Brora. The level of the River Brora and other local rivers can be found on the Scottish Canoe Association website here.

a. In the calm waters just upstream of the loch.

 

 

 

 

 

b. In the fast flowing waters below the loch. Depending on the volume of water there are about 20 garde 1-2 rapids between the loch and the sea. 1m is a 'good' level for paddling as you can canoe over most of the rocks at this level.

 

 

 

 

c. The picturesque Brora Harbour at the mouth of the river.
